RVSM/ TAWS
RVSM: On Jan 20, 2005 at 0400 in the morning the US airspace became a forbidden area for any non RVSM compliant aircraft. Reduced Vertical Separation Minimums was introduced as a proposed regulation several years ago. Europe and the North Atlantic has been under RVSM regs for years. RVSM airspace allows ATC to put more aircraft in the same airspace with 1000' vertical separation vs. 2000' as it has been. RVSM airspace begins at 28,000' and extends upwards to flight level 410 ( 41,000').
Many of the older 727's, 737's and similar aircraft are not compliant and therefore, are basically not economically feasible to operate due to the 25% greater fuel burns with the JT8D engines.
TAWS: Terrain Awareness Warning System; This equipment requirement was mandated to take effect on February 20th 2005 much as the RVSM requirement. After studying a long history of transport aircraft being flown in controlled conditions into the ground, the FAA determined that some kind of situational awareness warning system was necessary. TAWS accomplishes this by sounding an aural and displaying visual warning to let the pilots know that are flying into an area of terrain that is higher than their altitude.
Caribex inc has developed working relationships with a number of highly competitive maintenance facilities who have the experience to engineer and install the equipment required to obtain the RVSM certification. We can assist in delivering to the owners an accurate estimate of the costs and schedules involved. Caribex inc can deliver your aircraft to the facility and assign experienced personnel to represent your interests throughout the modifications.
We can also assist in providing the financing required to cover the non inconsiderable costs of the work You are looking at an overall expense of approximately $500,000. Half of this is generally due in advance of the work and the remainder on delivery.
The equipment includes:
Dual electronic air data computers Ugraded autopilot input circuitry Mode S transponders
New static ports, Dual Flight Management Sys Dual TCAS ll version 7
Dual digital altimeters Multi function display screens,
Note: Many aircraft already have some of the above equipment or have equipment that can be upgraded with some savings.
All of this equipment is basically integrated and associated. The aircraft has to be flown in test flights to demonstrate its ability to maintain flight altitude with little or no variance and after a review of the installation , the crews RVSM training and the flight test results, the FAA will approve the aircraft for flight in RVSM airspace. This is a difficult procedure and in total ,requires 2 to 3 months from beginning to end.
RVSM and TAWS is required of all Jet aircraft flying into the reserved airspace. We can assist owners of any private or commercial aircraft to obtain the best overall prices for compliance.
Note: Most of the world has adopted RVSM requirements with the exception of Africa.
